Fate of Art and Craft Museum to be decided soon in Punjab

The fate of the Punjab Art and Craft Complex and its artefacts regarding having a permanent place will be decided on Monday or Tuesday.

This small museum, representing Punjab’s rich culture and heritage, is presently housed at the Alhamra Cultural Complex under the Lahore Arts Council (LAC).

Executive Director Punjab Council of Arts Chaudhry Asif told this scribe on Saturday that the Information and Culture secretary would hold a meeting to decide where and on what terms and conditions the museum should be reestablished.

It may be mentioned the LAC does not want its place at Alhamra Cultural Complex to remain occupied by the crafts that belong to Punjab Council of Arts as it wants to utilise the place for art classes.

The Defence Day is being celebrated all over the country on Sept 6. In Lahore, different cultural institutions and arts councils have planned programmes to celebrate the day.

The Lahore Arts Council (LAC) will celebrate the day by holding an art competition among schoolchildren. The topic of the competition will be ‘Sept 6’.

The council will also hold a musical programme in which national songs will be sung. Prominent singers along with emerging ones will participate in the programme.

The subsidiary of Islamabad-based Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) in Lahore Shakir Ali Museum is also celebrating Sept 6 in a grand manner. The Museum will put on display a unique exhibition of portraits of the martyrs who were decorated with Nishan-i-Haider. Painter Muzaffar Butt, along with fellow artists have produced these portraits. The Shakir Ali Museum is also holding a workshop on calligraphy techniques which will be conducted by artist Ashraf Heera in collaboration with Bin Qalandar studio. The works would be produced during the workshop which would continue from Sept 1 to Sept 6 and would be displayed at the Shakir Ali Museum on the Defence Day.

The third programme the PNCA is holding on Sept 6 is a puppet show for children. The puppet show will be directed and conducted by Saleem Bismil, a proficient puppeteer from Lahore and son of the late TV and stage actor Jamil Bismil. The puppet show will be based on the theme of Sept 6.

The Ajoka Theatre has announced to resuming Theatre for Peace Project with a renewed vigour. In a press statement, the theatre group says the first major event of the project is the Theatre for Peace Festival at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi, from Sept 14 to 17, followed by a Theatre for Peace seminar on Sept 18.

Later in the year, work on a new production will start, written by Pakistani writers and directed by a veteran Indian director.

Other planned activities include Indo-Pak festivals in Chandigarh, Islamabad and Lahore, a Theatre for Peace workshop will also be held in January 2016.

A few days ago, Ajoka also staged its new play ‘Kaun Banay Ga Badshah’ at Alhamra Art Centre, The Mall, and also their famous play Bullah.
