Zainul Abedin in Divided South Asia: A Presentation by Iftikhar Dadi

Zainul Abedin’s life and work presents many puzzles. He is considered a major Indian artist until 1947, the most important East Pakistani artist, and also a leading figure of Bangladeshi art after 1971. He was also the principal of the art school in Dhaka, which he founded right after the 1947 partition, and was thus a functionary of the Pakistan government at a time when East Pakistan’s society was dominated by West Pakistan. How did his art practice negotiate these impasses?

Iftikhar Dadi is an artist and a scholar. He is Associate Professor in the Department of History of Art and Chair of the Department of Art at Cornell University. He has published numerous scholarly works, including the recent book on art from Pakistan, Modernism and the Art of Muslim South Asia. Along with Hammad Nasar, he recently curated the exhibition, Lines of Control at the Herbert F Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell, which explores the effects of borders and the remainders of partition on contemporary art. As a practicing artist, he collaborates with Elizabeth Dadi and has shown widely internationally.
