Successive Governments in Pakistan never realised the importance of Fine Arts

Lahore Arts Council (LAC) board of governors’ chairman Attaul Haq Qasmi says successive governments in Pakistan never realised the importance of fine arts.

At a convention titled ‘Artists and the World Today’ by the Artists Association of Punjab with the Pakistan National Council of Arts, Qasmi said on Monday whenever someone took any measure for the promotion of fine arts, the Finance Department raised objections making the measures a flop story.

He said the LAC had announced yearly awards in the fields of performing and fine arts.

Punjab Artists Association Chairperson Mian Ejazul Hasan, who presided over the convention, said painters should bring about a positive change in society.“We the artists should work together,” said Mr Hasan. He stressed the need for launching a website of the association at the earliest.

Art critic professor Qudus Mirza spoke on artists’ interest in the modern miniature. He said modern miniature paintings were revived for foreign art collectors.

College of Art and Design Principal Professor Dr Rahat Naveed Masud said in this age of great accessibility and open communication, freedom was unparalleled. In the art world today, with innumerable choices, the biggest challenge for art students was that they could do anything.

She said technology had influenced the realist artist as well, With the easy manipulation of the digital camera, has come photo realism where illusion of reality is magnified to such detail and nothing is left out, from the slightest wrinkle on the human face to the minutest skin aberration and to facial fuzz, all is attentively registered. Contemporary exhibition on figural art and portraiture demonstrate these trends noticeably, she said.

Ms Masud said Pakistani art had survived the most hostile of circumstances in the last 64 years. It not only survived but thrived, she said, adding that in the future too the creativity of Pakistani artist would override all obstacles.
