A group show of calligraphy paintings by seven artists opened at Ejaz Art Gallery.

The artists who put on display their works were Amir Kamal, Jamshed Qaisar, Javed Qamar, M. A. Bukhari, Noreen Akhtar, Shahid Rana and Zulfiqar Ali.

A number of calligraphy fanciers, artists, students from different art institutions visited the gallery.

The exhibition was a fine combination of traditional and contemporary calligraphy.

A visitor, Sadia Ambreen, from University of Punjab commenting on the exhibition said: “It’s a lovely exhibition and one finds in it great innovation when it comes to usage of different khats (styles of calligraphy)”.

Farooq Ahmed, another visitor and an art student, said: “The exhibition is a lovely combination of traditional and contemporary calligraphy while the works of artists such as Amir Kamal have a taste of their own.”

To renowned artist Saeed Akhtar, the exhibition had a lot to offer in terms of experimental work, new ideas and usage of khats.

Artist Noreen Akhtar while commenting on her works said Arabic inspired her. She said she had used the Arabic alphabets in her artwork and it made her feel an everlasting relation with the language.

Shahid Rana says: “Since I was very young, I have had a deep passion for art, my work explores the universal values of love, faith, prayer, beauty and divinity.”

He constructed new modes of expression based on traditional Arabic writing.

Javed Qamar coloured oil on canvas calligraphy caught the attention of the viewers at first glance. The red and green contrasts were beautiful and powerful.

Aamir Kamal’s works also had a great appeal. The artist’s specialty is in the illumination of the traditional style of calligraphy using gold leaf.

Jamshed Qaiser’s works carrying blue and shimmering gold colours were very much appealing to the eye.
