It is quite a huge accomplishment for an artist to travel from one cultural arena to another while picking up and expressing the common and important vitals of both the stylised trends.

As mentioned by American abstract expressionist artist Ronnie Landfield, painter Md Tokon of Bangladeshi origin is one such talent in the New York art arena.

Tokon, who is in his 30s, has evolved into an emerging artist who has grasped the essence of the east and the west to create a blended style of his very own during his education and residence in the United States over the last decade.

Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts is hosting a solo painting event of artist Md Tokon titled Silent Spaces at the organisation’s Dhanmondi-based gallery in the city. The exhibition was inaugurated on 6 January by veteran artist Professor Rafiqun Nabi while the ceremony was attended, among others, by Akku Chowdhury, a founding trustee member of Liberation War Museum and Tazwar Firoz Haque, a prominent art collector of our country.

Large spacious canvases make up settings of his works those are composed in acrylic, a favourite medium of the artist. Sprawling, mystified oceans of multi-layered colours and shades fill up the compositional spaces while subtle and intricate blends provide dreamy backgrounds.

Distinctly striking and contrasting shades create opportunities to bloom and sustain elements for magnificent foregrounds which, in the words of artist Tokon act as pathways and podiums to help glide and forage in search of emotionally inspiring artistic nourishment for the brain and soul.

Abstract landscapes, skies, lakes, seas and mountains push through the semi-surreal settings where life seems to usher promise, bliss and encouragement in the present global crisis of chaos, disturbance and self-centered indifference.

Pure and simple symbolic elements rule the frontiers of the highly colourful artworks where in-depth maturity, passion and sublime sentiment of the artistic mind play important roles in creating romantic moods and soulful ideology of the harmonious spirit.

Intense feel of peace, love and well-being are revealed through the pleasant compositions of artist Md Tokon whose childhood and teen years were built up within rural environment of a Jhenidah village. He grew up amidst plainness and modesty of the typical Bangali family where close-knit family values had been essential features of humanitarian lifestyle and developing morale.

Compositions like Life, soil and surface, Sunflower symphony, Spirit of nature, Don’t let the sun go down, Midnight dream, Musical mist and Music on a rainy day together with many other titles are proven masterly creations of the brilliant Bangali artist, Md Tokon whose continual search for natural beauty and self-motivated commitment and inspiration are unending and vastly impressive.

Many paintings of Tokon have been collected by reputed international galleries and private collectors.

The exhibition is open daily from 12:00pm to 8:00pm until 14 January.
