Lahore – Pakistan.

Forty years have passed since the 1971 war that led to the creation of the state of Bangladesh.

The Citizens Archive of Pakistan (CAP) is commemorating the transformation of the subcontinent with an exhibition that will chronicle the period from the birth of Pakistan to the birth of Bangladesh at the Zahoor-ul-Ahlaq Gallery at the National College of Arts, Lahore.

An interactive timeline begins with recollections of the arduous train journey from Delhi to Lahore in 1947 and beginnings of the new state of Pakistan. Videos, photographs, objects, advertisements and oral histories take visitors through the 50s and 60s in Pakistan – highlighting the landmarks and achievements in our history, and the dominant personalities that shaped it. A diverse collection of oral histories about specific historical events range from subjects such as the war of 1965, to the formation of the All Pakistan Women’s Association to the beginning of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Songs composed and sung by Pakistanis over the years recreate the mood of times gone by. The timeline ends with another partition and the birth of the state of Bangladesh.

A collaboration with The 1947 Partition Archive – a citizen-powered non-profit organization, dedicated to documenting, preserving and oral histories from all ethnic, religious and economic communities affected by the Partition of British India in 1947 has provided oral histories from the other side of the border. The material represented is from a number of sources, and does not necessarily reflect the views of The Citizens Archive of Pakistan. The State of Being so Divided is a travelling exhibition created by the Citizens Archive of Pakistan that was previously held at the IVS Gallery at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi.
