VM Art Gallery of the ZVMG Rangoonwala Trust is happy to partner with Roohbaru to present Rehai, an exhibition featuring works by Abdullah Qureshi, Adeel uz Zafar, Faizan Riedinger, Marium M. Habib, Noormah Jamal, Rabia S. Akhtar and Sohail Zuberi.
Rehai features a diverse selection of contemporary works that speak to the experience of mental illness, the factors that contribute to it and the hope of release from it. The works meditate on individual and collective sources of anxiety and instability in modern day society. Portraits and figures create a space for vulnerability and self-reflection, while exploring the complexities of self, identity, belonging, and mortality. Some works allow moments of reflection and stillness through repetitive patterns and mark-making, while others hint at fantastical environments or psychological narratives with undertones of escape on the one hand, and despair on the other.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a week of art, activity, and dialogue designed to generate an open conversation about mental illness, which has for too long been denied to many due to its status as a taboo in Pakistani society. Through this programming, we hope to provide a safe environment that propels individuals to not only talk about mental illness but also learn about the options available to seek relief.
Roohbaru is a non-profit organization founded to create awareness about mental health, provide online consultations with mental health professionals and an on-demand mental health and well-being platform. Their mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, devise a system to make therapy easily accessible and create an online community for support and increase in knowledge. Roohbaru aims to create a widely available and affordable tele-mental health platform to improve the mental health of people in Pakistan.
This exhibition is intended as a fundraiser for Roohbaru. All proceeds from exhibition sales will support their commitment to providing a safe space where individuals who are affected by mental distress or illness can experience hope, recovery and wellness without the attachment of stigma.
