Century of Furniture on Display
If you step into the Frere Hall these days, you can easily be transported back to the 19th or 20th century as the historic building is hosting an exhibition of furniture which is surely a blast from the past.
The Mughlai-worked Shatranji Jhoola and the Malika bed tell a story of their own among a total of 118 furniture pieces on display.
The three-day exhibition by Subcontinent Furniture started on Friday.
Set against the backdrop of history and elegance, Subcontinent Furniture is back for the second time with its wide collection of 19th and 20th century furniture pieces to exhibit for the generation who is far away from history.
The person behind the exhibition, Sonia Rehman Qureshi, told The Express Tribune that she extended her interest to restoring and reviving antique interior. She selected each masterpiece individually and restored each furniture item with her signature style.
“It’s my passion to interpret stories as stories should continue their journey from generation to generation,” shared Qureshi, enjoying fresh air in the Frere Hall corridor. The new generation should know how the lifestyle of our ancestors was, she said.
The display of archaic furniture has attracted art lovers from all over the city. By bringing out a collection that represents a flavour of all surfaces and a celebration of the past, Qureshi gracefully exhibited chairs, chest of drawers, chests, desks, display cabinets, sideboards, tables, settees and sofas.
“This collection is amazing and it will be cherished by not only those who own them today but also the future generations,” said a visitor.
