Friday 4 May, 2012
the Exhibition will countinue till 22 July, 2012
Open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day

National Gallery of Australia
Parkes Place, Parkes,
Australian Capital Territory, 2600, Australia

From May to July 2012, the National Gallery will celebrate the second National Indigenous Art Triennial, unDisclosed. Over autumn and winter, Gallery visitors will have the opportunity to experience the dynamic visual expression of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. 20 artists have been selected for their commitment to excellence and their daring to explore new fields of practice and artistic vision, these artists both inform and redefine contemporary Indigenous art as we presently know it.

A The twenty artists featured in UnDisclosed: 2nd National Indigenous Art Triennial are: Tony Albert, Vernon Ah Kee, Bob Burruwal, Michael Cook, Lorraine Connelly-Northey, Nici Cumpston, Fiona Foley, Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori, Gunybi Ganambarr, Julie Gough, Lindsay Harris, Jonathan Jones, Danie Mellor, Naata Nungurrayi, Maria Josette Orsto, Daniel Walbidi, Christian Thompson, Alick Tipoti, Lena Yarinkura and Nyapanyapa Yunupingu.

The exhibition’s theme, ‘unDisclosed’, alludes to the spoken and the unspoken, the known and the unknown, what can be revealed and what cannot. It captures the duality of the disclosed and undisclosed embedded within the works and the exhibition as a whole. Viewers are invited to unearth the layers of hidden and subtle meanings and to place them alongside those that are conspicuous.

you are invited to come party with some businesses and culturals on the 500-block of Main Street. The event is free and open to the public… especially all of the people who work downtown. After all, if downtown workers make an attempt to support these types of initiatives, then that means that we’ll end up with even more shops, galleries and restaurants. Without the support, some areas of downtown will continue to struggle. Here we have a group of young artists and professionals that are putting themselves out there to attempt to create a vibrant scene. The only thing they ask is that you mark this event on your calendar and bring some of your friends and co-workers over on the day of the block party. Heck, even The Hyatt and the Pierce Arrow Museum have joined in to ignite this grassroots undertaking.

block-long celebration of the businesses, galleries and shops on our street! On Friday May 11th from 4-10PM, we’ll be featuring wine tasting, music, art, a handmade marketplace and more at multiple venues on the 500 Block of Main St. Events are free & open to the public!

MONUMENTS: A REFUGE IN MARGINS
2-23 MAY 2012
Nabad art gallery
Amman, Jordan

Under the patronage of HRH Princess Rahma bint El Hassan, Nabad presents an exhibition of paintings by Jordanian architect and self-taught multidisciplinary visual artist, Dina Haddadin, on Wednesday 2 May at 6:30 pm. The artist uses both traditional and experimental techniques, including installation and video, creating multi-layered works that address the concept of the ‘margins’, those ‘leftover’ spaces in the urban landscape where architecture reaches the border of human intervention. Dina poses timely questions and defines her exhibition concept as a situation where “seeking refuge in a margin characterizes the city’s non-places as defined monuments.”

Born in 1983, Dina Haddadin obtained a B.A. in Architecture from the Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2006. Since her graduation, she has been practicing architecture at Symbiosis Design in Amman. In 2008, she attended courses at the School of Visual Arts in New York and has since held two solo exhibitions, “Beyond Emptiness” (2011), and “Transit” (2010). Haddadin has participated in numerous group shows, the most recent being an exhibition of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts’ permanent collection, as part of the Manama Capital of Arab Culture 2012 events in Bahrain, as well as in a number of international workshops.

Artist’s statement:
When seeking refuge in a margin characterizes the city’s non-places as defined monuments.
Exploring the restlessness of our times—times of change, transition, departures and deviations—where, in constructing a new order, the destruction of an old one is often the cost. Is it a power struggle, an instinctive recoil from the void, or a fear of nothingness that pushes us to build and rebuild? In a constantly changing, morphing topography, ruins, decay and shattered concrete render our city suspended—places of absence, non-places of emptiness, omissions and gaps.
Where could one find one’s concrete symbol of belonging in such a changing environment? In a monument? Are monuments always a symbol for a treasured past, a petrified moment, or a designed demonstration of people’s memories? Could it be an accidental manifestation of thoughts, memories and happenings, floating around and sometimes managing to land somewhere in our physical environment into transient monuments?

Today Indian art is becoming increasingly accessible to the general public. A person today may be visiting natural wonders, ancient temples, or traditional festivals. But a visit to a contemporary art exhibition is sure to add a new and unconventional perspective to the experience. Explorations in a creative mind have roads which resemble no known road. Until an idea in the mind gets converted into a visual on the canvas or paper, until it becomes instinctive to call it as an individual art, the artist continues to wander around. In the waiting till the artist reaches a point of creative expression, we discover that everywhere we look everything looks the same and is yet different.

Experimentation is an aspect that is emphazised on. The expressions and opinions on the canvas are more than just a surface to paint on. No boundaries are set nor restrictions implied to any one context or their meanings. Some are obvious and bold while others are hidden. The canvas is cut for different compositions to create the work. This relates the artworks to life and its perceptions and challenges that one faces. The works are thus like portraits and no matter how hard one tries, they continue to reveal the trials and travails of the inner self.

The effort or practice seems to be a conscious investment and transforms the ordinary into extraordinary, abstract into artworks and tragedy into resilience and beauty. Exploring newer modes and materials to create images and forms of immense interest and significance, one can say that it was a script on its own.

DUBAI / In her first solo exhibition, Emirati artist Lamya Gargash presents a provocative new body of work that examines identity, perception and acceptance in modern day society. The exhibition will be on display at The Third Line from April 25 until May 30 2012.

Lamya Gargash, representative of the inaugural UAE Pavilion during the 2009 Venice Biennale, unveils a new body of work that addresses societal notions of beauty, intimate perceptions of self and identity through a portrait series at The Third Line. Influenced by such artists as Cindy Sherman, the photographs aspire to raise challenging and important questions about self-reflection and criticism in relevance to media representation of body image and beauty standards in today’s society.

Through the Looking the Glass investigates how we constantly view ourselves in comparison to an ever elusive standard, prompted by the constant bombardment of media imagery dictating ‘how we should look’. Minor defects become drastic, resulting in even more drastic measures undertaken to reach that ideal standard of beauty. Our self-perception, and subsequently our identity, becomes indistinct; as if viewing ourselves through a distorted looking glass.

The photographic series comprises of diptychs, with one panel depicting a portrait of the subject as seen by the world, and an opposing panel depicting the subject as seen through their mind’s eye. The project which has taken close to two years to complete, was facilitated by the use of artificial prosthetics; slight imperfections, which are accentuated and most times magnified, to a scale equivalent to that haunting mental image of self-judgment. The viewer is allowed into the photographed subject’s subconscious, sharing their most confidential vulnerabilities and insecurities.

The quest for physical perfection is an age old endeavour, and continues to be our primary concern today – Through the Looking Glass, according to Gargash is “an extension of constant self-critique and perpetual state of anxiousness over attaining perfection”. The works reveal the classic social paradox of seeking ideal beauty: we are all troubled by it, yet still constantly judge each other. As such, Gargash chose everyday people as her photographed models to evoke a collective and humanitarian sentiment; an invitation to raise awareness and accept ourselves, and each other, the way we are.

This project was possible thanks to the generous funding by Emirates Foundation. Their continued support of arts and culture has helped promote and nurture creativity, particularly among young women and men from the UAE who strive to create a dynamic platform for the arts in the region.

Lamya Gargash

Concerned with the extensive study of self, identity and perception, Lamya Gargash documents the forgotten spaces in public and private realms in Emirati society, and more recently has begun investigating the fragility of human nature from a psychological angle. Throughout her career Gargash has won a number of awards for her work in film and photography. Gargash participated in the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009) as the featured artist of the UAE’s first ever national pavilion. Presenting her new series Familial, Gargash exhibited photographs taken across the UAE that visually play with the notion of hospitality and the politics of interior design. In 2004, Gargash received first prize in the Emirates Film Festival, as well as Ibdaa Special Jury Award for her movie titled, Wet Tiles. Gargash’s first artist book entitled Presence is a photographic series, which documents recently vacated houses and structures in the United Arab Emirates that have been abandoned or left for demolition. Gargash received her Masters of Arts in Communication Design from Saint Martins in the UK in 2007 after graduating from the American University of Sharjah in 2004. She has participated in group exhibitions in Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, and France as well as within the UAE. Gargash currently lives and works in Dubai.

The Third Line
The Third Line is an art gallery that represents contemporary Middle Eastern artists locally, regionally and internationally, with a gallery space in Dubai. In addition to on-going exhibitions, The Third Line hosts non-profit, alternative programs to increase interest and debate in the region. Represented artists include: Abbas Akhavan, Ala Ebtekar, Amir H. Fallah, Babak Golkar, Ebtisam Abdulaziz, Farhad Moshiri, Fouad Elkoury, Golnaz Fathi, Hassan Hajjaj, Hayv Kahraman, Huda Lutfi, Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige, Lamya Gargash, Laleh Khorramian, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Pouran Jinchi, Rana Begum, Sherin Guirgius, Shirin Aliabadi, Slavs and Tatars, Susan Hefuna, Tarek Al- Ghoussein and Youssef Nabil.

Emirates Foundation
The Emirates Foundation is an independent, philanthropic organization set up by the Government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to facilitate new public-private funded initiatives to improve the welfare of all people across the UAE. The Foundation assists people, institutions and community organizations that contribute to the nation’s long-term progress and sustainability. It is supported by donations from the private sector, the government and private individuals interested in philanthropy. Specific initiatives related to these themes are developed within five core programmes: Social Development, Education, Arts & Culture, Science & Technology, and Environment. Its mission is consistent with the ideals of the nation’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Alchemy is Southbank Centre’s annual festival of music, performance, literature, debate, fashion and design.

Join us to explore the rich cultural connections between Bangladesh, India, Pakistan Sri Lanka and the UK.

Southbank Centre’s third annual Alchemy festival returns with another potent mix of music, dance, literature, film, fashion and design that will cast an illuminating light on the fast-changing economic and cultural landscape of the Asian subcontinent.

In a first for Alchemy, 2012 sees Southbank Centre’s riverside venues and spaces become a film set, complete with a ‘Taste of India’ food market, and festival-goers can enroll as dancing and singing extras in a Bollywood-style movie to be made throughout the festival and screened as a finale. With a particular focus on Pakistan, this year’s festival features artists from across the Asian subcontinent, from Bangladesh to Sri Lanka, and explores the relationship these cultures have with the UK through a range of exciting new collaborations, premieres of new work and rare performances by legendary artists.

The festival has been put together in collaboration with a number of partners, including the British Council, the British Pakistani Foundation and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Jude Kelly, Artistic Director at Southbank Centre, said: “Be-fitting a region whose identity has been shaped and re-shaped over millennia through the intermingling of peoples and their cultures, our third Alchemy is the most collaborative – the most alchemic – yet.

For 10 days the entire Southbank Centre will buzz with the sights, sounds, tastes and thoughts of the subcontinent as leading cultural organisations, Nobel prize-winning authors, acclaimed designers, British Asian soap stars, filmmakers, DJs and master musicians from Rajasthan, Pakistan and Portsmouth come together to celebrate, collaborate and explore what this culture is and could be.”

Alchemy Festival Highlights:

ART
The exhibition reflects the very best of emerging contemporary British Pakistani art and culture, an area that has largely evolved in response to, and as a result of, the key political and cultural moments in recent history.

Artists include: Nurjan, Khaver Idrees, Shafaq Ahmad, Maaida Noor, Mansoora Hassan, M A Bukhari, Salman Farooqi, Javed Qamar, Rachel Wilberforce, Ayesha Amjad, Sofia Niazi, Nasreen Raja, Zahir Rafiq, Ammar Syed and Ahad Mustafa.

FILM
Southbank Centre will produce its very own Bollywood-style film in 10 days as part of Alchemy. Poet and playwright Nikesh Shukla will write the script that will be brought to life by director Aneil Karia with choreography by Shobna Gulati, from TV soap Coronation Street. Festival-goers and participants in the free Bollywood dance classes will become extras in the film, starring alongside dancers, actors and musicians from across London. Award-winning film Life Goes On, an adaptation of the King Lear fable set in contemporary London will be screened during the festival. Written and directed by Sangeeta Datta, the film features Bollywood star Soha Ali Khan alongside British and Indian actors. Also being screened is Franz Osten’s lavish 1928 silent film Shiraz, with live accompaniment from tabla player Sarvar Sabri and the Sabri Ensemble.

MUSIC
Asian Dub Foundation defined the ‘Asian Underground’ of the early 1990s and have been known for their uncompromising approach to music and politics ever since, through hard hitting albums, polemical documentaries and forays into opera. The collective, who emerged from an east London community music project, are joined by artists including Nathan ‘Flutebox’ Lee, Ministry of Dhol, and Romay featuring Ar8 Collexion to perform at the Royal Festival Hall. Continuing a collaboration that began at Alchemy in 2011, rising star Raghu Dixit performs new work composed in Delhi with members of Bellowhead, Southbank Centre Artists in Residence, and featuring choreography by Gauri Sharma Tripathi, also Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre. The result of this truly alchemic coming together draws as much from heavy metal and jazz as it does from folk traditions of both the UK and India. Folk traditions are also explored by Bickram Ghosh, Papon and Rachel Sermanni in Troikala: the Arts within a Trio. Renowned percussionist Pete Lockett performs with 16 Indian musicians from Rajasthan on stage at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in a project that comes to Europe for the very first time. Continuing in the collaborative spirit, Susheela Raman returns to Alchemy in the company of Qawwali singers from Pakistan to perform new music created during Raman’s recent trip to Lahore. Global YouTube sensation Sachal Jazz Orchestra give their world premiere performance presenting infectious interpretations of classic jazz and bossa nova standards, including Dave Brubeck’s Take Five, which he said was ‘the most interesting and different recording of Take Five that I’ve heard’. There is a rare opportunity to see the family of Dr. L. Subramaniam, Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam and Ambi Subramaniam perform on stage together, and singer Shankar Mahadevan performs with India’s virtuoso sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee.

The sound of young British Asians comes alive at Radio 1 DJ Nihal’s Burban Mela which provides a showcase for hip-hop, bhangra and R&B artists on what is known as the Burban – brown urban – scene. Confluence brings together three youth orchestras from different genres, the National Youth Jazz Collective, the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and Samyo (the National Indian Music Youth Orchestra), who perform together for the first time. Also performing at Alchemy are British composer and sarod maestro Soumik Datta, who premieres his extraordinary audio-visual concert Sounds of Bengal; Arun Ghosh, who returns with a contemporary arrangement of selected Tagore material; and Simon Thacker performs a world premiere by legendary American minimalist composer Terry Riley, with his India/Western supergroup Svara-Kanti.

DANCE AND PERFORMANCE
Alchemy once again includes a range of cutting-edge dance performances and new commissions. There is a collaborative work-in-progress from visual artist Hetain Patel and poet Shane Solanki who explore their Gujarati heritage through spoken text, film, music, physical theatre and comedy. Contemporary Kathak dance and live jazz trumpet combine in When Spring Comes, the latest children’s show by Half Moon Young People’s Theatre. Whale Music is another exciting collaboration, and combines the poetry of Sir Andrew Motion with the talents of musicians Sameer Rao and Matthew Sharp in a piece exploring loneliness and the search for a connection. Free concerts and performances of South Asian dance will be celebrated in works by Divya Kasturi and Shane Shambhu Company. Throughout the festival Southbank Centre’s boiler room will be transformed into Mrs U’s underground bunker in Looking for Kool, a one-woman promenade performance by Rani Moorthy of Manchester-based Rasa Theatre.

LITERATURE AND TALKS
Award-winning Bengali economist and Nobel Prize winner Professor Amartya Sen joins Lord Nicholas Stern, Director of London School of Economics’ Asia Research Centre, and Indian designer Rajeev Sethi (Louis Vuitton, Mumbai Airport) for a lively debate on the future for cultural industries. Entrepreneurship and social action are celebrated at Alchemy with a contribution from Bechana, a social enterprise collective that sprung from the floods in Pakistan to make quilts from discarded pieces of cloth. Watermarked: Women and Water in Pakistan also looks at the Pakistan floods, exploring the effects of the floods on women and featuring stories from comedian Shazia Mirza, broadcaster and cultural critic Ziauddin Sardar, and award-winning novelist Kamila Shamsie. Authors Moni Mohsin, Rosie Thomas and Farahad Zama discuss the different manifestations of love in South Asian culture in The Many Faces of Love, and there will also be readings and discussions from authors Neel Mukherjee, Liu Zhenyunand Ahmed Rashid. Alchemy Artist in Residence Nikesh Shukla gives a motivational speech on how to be a writer rather than being seen as an ‘ethnic’ writer, and there is a performance from Canadian MC/spoken word artist Humble the Poet.

FASHION AND DESIGN
Fashion and design play a part in the festival with The Clore Ballroom being transformed into a runway for an event in collaboration with the British Council, showcasing collections and textiles from some of the most exciting fashion designers coming out of India. The JIYO residency, led by acclaimed designer Rajeev Sethi, explores how traditional craft, knowledge and practices of India can be preserved and applied to contemporary design. An exhibition of works will be on display in the Royal Festival Hall foyers, and this will be the first time work been shown outside of India. Also on display is work from a number of emerging British Pakistani artists The Brit Pak, whose work explores cultural identity and aims to challenge negative stereotypes, and work by Indian designers Gunjan Gupta and Ayush Kasliwal.

FREE EVENTS
Visitors to Alchemy can take part in a range of free activities throughout the festival, from daily yoga in The Clore Ballroom to workshops in Urdu calligraphy, Punjabi poetry and Pakistani folk dance. Those looking to make it on the big screen can take part in Bollywood dance workshops, learning routines that will be captured for Southbank Centre’s Bollywood film. There is a packed free music programme including performances by Jason Singh, Shlomo, Jesse Bannister, Ranjana Ghatak and Rosabella Gregory. Other performances include multi-disciplinary show The Arrival presented by Tamasha and Circus Space, an age-old tale of migration based on Oscar winner Shaun Tan’s novel, and The London Jungle Book by Indian Gond tribal artist Bhajju Shyam, in which London metamorphosises into a fantastical jungle-like land inhabited by some bizarre creatures and customs.
